IM Frankfurt am Main 2016
Ironman Frankfurt was full of surprises this year. Ups and downs through the race and a great battle with myself. It started off with a surpirsing swim of 54 mins. I was estimating myself around 55-57 mins so I was quite happy to see me below 55. Swimming once per week seems to work for me.
As the bike started I think i went out a little hard but got myself undercontrol with just over a 36km/hr avg. On the first lap. Around the 120km I had a very hard time with myself and didnt want to race anymore. I just wanted to take my Helmet and shoes off as they were annoying me and I just didn’t want to ride my bike. This battle with myself went on for around 20 mins. After coming out this down phase everyhting was going to plan again. A little slower then planned but it was ok as we had alot of Headwind so it was a great battle out there.
The RUN. This is where all the fun starts. I was holding my desired pace quite well at 4:43/km and was feeling great. This was the first time my son recognise me in a race and smiled at me which made me extremley happy. But from kilometre 25 and all went a little down hill. I started have the same problems as last year. Was a feeling of not being able to breathe. I fought this and had to back my pace up so I would make it the finish line. I had to change my race goal to try make it under 10 hours. I battle it through to the end with a 3:43 Marathon and a 9:54 Ironman. Not what I wanted but I am happy with my own Iron Battle with myself. This is why I love the sport.
